Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions

Our Lady of the Missions Convent, Madurampattu, Tamil Nadu 2003

When the Sisters left Thamaraikulam, Kanyakumari, we looked for a suitable mission in another diocese in Tamil Nadu. Sisters Lilly Vas and Joyce Peter went to different places in Tamil Nadu on search of young women willing to join our congregation, they were enthusiastically on a vocation tour visiting parish even in Bangalore and Mysore. It was on one of these trips they met the Priest Anthony Swamy in Madurampattu who liked the work of the sisters and also encouraged young girls from Madurampattu to join the sisters, he made arrangements with their parents and sent 13 girls to Bangalore, to learn English and also see if they can discern their call.  It was here that he also offered us a place next to the parish to open a community. He offered two teaching posts in the parish school. A small piece of land was procured in December 2001, Sisters Pushpa Manimuthu and Juliana D’Souza who stayed in the parish residence began the work of the convent construction, Sisters Pushpa and Joyce Peter saw to the completion of the convent it was inaugurated and Blessed by Bishop on 20 October 2005, in the presence of Sr. Rose Mary the Provincial, her team and sisters from the province. Silvia Joseph Kodiyan was the first Nurse in the dispensary she was called by the villagers as ‘doctor sister’ in Madurampattu.

It was then time to choose a name for the new mission. Many Sisters were consulted and finally decided on the name “Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions”. Madurampattu mission too experienced the pangs of birthing, and challenges of those early days including soaring temperatures, lack of water and distance from the markets, but none of this deterred the pioneers.

Madurampattu is a poor village. Most of the men work in the cities or other states and women work in the fields or at home. There now four professed RNDM Sisters from the parish. The Sisters ministry in the parish and the village is appreciated and the people requested for a English Medium school in 2009 a nursery school was opened. Today it has grown to a primary school about 200 students are enrolled.
