Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions

Nirmala Niketan Convent, MuduPerar, Mangalore, 1981

In February 1980, the parish priest of Belvai, Father Shenoy, came along with the parish priest of St Francis Xavier’s Church at MuduPerar, Father Emmanuel D’Souza, to visit the Sisters. Father Shenoy asked about the possibility of opening a house in Perar which would allow the Sisters to offer health care and sewing classes to the people. He also indicated that two teaching posts in the existing parish school would be there for the new community. This occurred at the time when there was much talk about less institutionalization, and the need for greater mobility in the exercise of our mission. The possibility of another house in Mangalore, for vocation recruitment, and a neighbouring community forBelvaialso were considered. The conversation was quickly communicated to the provincial superior, Mary John Bosco, and the process of opening a house in Perar began. Mary John Bosco, Mary Sebastian and Mary Esther visited Perar parish with Bishop Basil D’Souza in Mangalore. The bishop warmly welcomed the Sisters and agreed to gift one hectare of land to the congregation. He suggested that Stephanie and Mary Rose de Silva be transferred from Alankar to Perar School in June 1981. Sr. Mary Esther and a helper began to stay in a small hut in Perar, and other Sisters took turns to be with them.

In 1984 building work began and the house was blessed on 30 April1985. It is built on a beautiful hill top where Sisters can experience and appreciate both the silence and the beauty of creation. Srs. Mary Esther and Mary Rose were the pioneers of this mission.  Later, Sr. Mary John Baptist took charge of the dispensary and maternity home, which were closed in 1990 as there was sufficient medical facilities in the area. The Sisters are still teaching in the parish school, are involved in parish activities such as work with Basic Christian Communities, women’s welfare, teaching catechism in Sunday school and visiting both the sick and families. A small nursery school is run in the old dispensary building.
