Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions

Mariam Nivas, Bengaluru 1964

In the year 1963 Archbishop Thomas Pothacamury of Bangaluru Archdiocese gladly welcomed the RNDMs to Bengaluru, and assured them they could establish a novitiate in his diocese. The pioneering Sisters, Mary Desmond, provincial superior and Mary Philomene Mahon, regional superior, spent several months in Bengaluru in search of a suitable property. Finally, they located a bungalow in Milton Street which could house a small community. The property was purchased in December 1963, and Mary Lucille Benney and Marie Gabrielle Lagan took possession of the bungalow on 11 February 1964, the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes. Later another bungalow next to the first one was bought to accommodate the young Sisters who would be attending inter-congregational programmes at the Sudeep Institute, the Diocesan Renewal Centre, which was very close to our house.

The new house was called “Mariam Nivas” meaning “House of Mary”. The first superior was Mary Anne de Jesus (Marie Andelfinger) and Mary Lucille, the sub-prioress. The other pioneering Sisters were Marie Gabrielle and Mary Sebastian Zacharia. On 19 March 1964, the feast of St Joseph, the Eucharist was celebrated by Father Ivo Fernandes CSsR for the first time at the new abode. It was also the Silver Jubilee celebration of Marie Gabrielle.

The Community has celebrated 50 years of its existence and they continue the ministry of Education, they started with a Nursery and Primary school, now they have extended to class X with a total number of 700 students , they are involved in the pastoral activity of the parish, the community had been the formation center for candidates who were students, learning English and discerning their vocation.
