Kanni Marial Convent, Thamaraikulam, Tamil Nadu 1987-1996
In 1986 Sisters Bernardine, Mary Ita and Amala Joseph visited Goa to explore the possibility of a foundation on a property offered to us. As it was not a feasible case, they decided to explore other possibilities, and met with Father A. Gabriel of Kottar Diocese who invited them to Thamaraikulam Parish. Bishop Marianus Arokiaswamy was happy to welcome the RNDMs to the diocese, Father Dionysius offered them a small property, which was share of his family property and some money to help begin the mission.
The house was formally opened on 15 January 1987, with Sisters Mary Esther and Regina Mary Rayappan as the founding members. Philomena Moolan soon joined the community as the nurse. At the continual insistence of the people and the parish priest, an English-medium primary school was opened. Sisters visited the families regularly, prepared people for various sacraments, provided tuition for poor students and took an active part in parish activities. But this was not a mission destined to last for too long.
At the 1995 province assembly, the RNDM presence in Thamaraikulam was evaluated, and it was decided to close the mission. The procedure for closing the house and the alienation of the property proved difficult. The province, assisted by overseas funding agencies, had invested significantly in the construction of the convent, dispensary and the school, but received very little recompense for their financial and apostolic investment. In September 1996, Dominica Maria A’Cruz and Ancy John Mundakal left Thamaraikulam, knowing that they had done their best for the people. Now it was time to move on to another mission.
